We're in a new landscape.

There are plenty of new opportunities and there are perhaps many more questions of how to access and utilize these opportunities.

Gone are the days of the 35 year career, white picket fence and 2.5 kids.

The economy is dynamic and always in a state of disruption.

Facebook is just over 10 years old and Snapchat just over 5 years old.

Think about that. Hasn't it felt like we've had these utilities forever at this point? We can have whatever we want when we want it and we can disrupt the whole system is we are calculated, cunning and organized in our approach.

We need new tools in order to navigate the landscape and be the force we always envisioned for ourselves.

Below are the 7 tools that when equipped will help you navigate the ever changing landscape with vigor and esteem.

Create your brand and online presence.

“Personal branding is about managing your name — even if you don’t own a business — in a world of misinformation, disinformation, and semi-permanent Google records. Going on a date? Chances are that your “blind” date has Googled your name. Going to a job interview? Ditto.” -Tim Ferriss

The internet is still the Wild Wild West.

Personally, I love it.

It’s a place that if you have a computer, access to the internet, a mind to create and hands to execute you can literally stake your claim to the riches of the battlefield. Today’s economy has little resemblance to what our fathers’ had to deal with. Gone are the days of finding a secure job, working for 35 years and retiring after we put in our time.

Now, we need to be dynamic. We need to make our voice heard. We need to establish ourselves above the competition.

How does one do this? By creating a brand online. Do this on Quora, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube etc. In your 20’s is the best time to work towards and accomplish this.

What you are doing is creating a bread crumb trail of your hard work. You website is an über-resume should you chose to start interviewing for jobs.

Invest 5–10% of your income on yourself.

“I’m not a ‘Business-Man’! I’m a Business… man! Let me handle my business, damn!” -Jay-Z

When you are in your 20’s chances are you in your prime in terms of your energy levels. You are able to take in and create a lot during the day. As we get older it is harder to retain high levels of energy throughout the day.

When you are in your 20’s you are able to take a lot of your time and resources into investing in yourself. I’m not talking about buying that new GUCCI sweater or leasing that new BMW 3 series.

I’m talking about taking some of your income and purchase books or perhaps joining the writing seminar you’ve been contemplating.

You can purchase yoga sessions that help improve your physical health.

You can purchase modules online that help you improve in all things from expanding your mind to helping you cook vegan meals.

The sky’s the limit. Just don’t fall into the complacency trap.

Become a Marketing Assassin.

“Marketing is a contest for people’s attention.” -Seth Godin

You’re a creative, I get it.

You aren’t like the drones that go to the 9–5 and grind away their lives for someone else’s dream.

You have a vision.

You want to create a revolution.

Awesome.

But do you always want to be poor for the rest of your life? Probably not. Let’s be honest. We all want our creative endeavors to evolve into the means for our financial gain. It’s a product of the world we live in.

Marketing is essentially applied psychology. You are using tools and utilizing the way people think to help create action around your product or service.

It’s not just enough to put your ether out into the world. You have to be an assassin with marketing the vision. You have to get people to buy in and ultimately convert to your vision.

Of course you need to be adding value to peoples’ lives. If you aren’t doing that, no amount of marketing will convert your viewers into customers.

  • How are you going to get people to click on your website?
  • How are you going to sell your product?
  • How are you going to create a buzz on Instagram?
  • How are you going to get people to feel you are solving their problem?

If you can develop the skill of marketing, influencing and persuading people of your value proposition and converting that into sales, you will become unstoppable down the line in today’s economy.

Use your machete.

“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” -Thomas Jefferson

Your 20’s is a time for taking action.

Try things.

Screw up.

Learn from the mistakes.

Get back up and try again.

When I say use your machete what I mean is be the explorer rather than the cartographer.

You don’t need to plan everything out in your 20’s. Your level of responsibility has probably increased drastically over what you faced in your teens, however it still pales in comparison to what is coming down the road.

Get out there and start cutting away at the jungle. Take action. Get up out of your house. Tell people of your ideas. Work hard on what’s eating away at you. If your efforts aren’t working- reevaluate, sharpen your machete and start hacking away again.

Use your down time to invest in learning.

“Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” -Albert Einstein

Your 20’s are going to be filled with a lot of idle down time. Between the countless discretionary hours during your 4 year tenure at University (if that’s your route in life) to the time you have when you get home from your “grown up job” you will have so much time to invest in growing your mind.

In today’s day and age there is absolutely no excuse to expanding your mind through learning.

You can

  • Listen to a podcast on your commute to work.
  • Read a book before you go to sleep.
  • Binge watch countless educational videos on youtube.
  • Join Meetups that tackle thousands of different activities.

The possibilities are endless.

The other side of utilizing your down time is spending time at bars or bingeing Orange Is The New Black or taking your work home with you.

In your 20’s you are transforming into the person you are going to become later on down the road. Equip that person with knowledge and power.

Nurture a close relationship with a special nucleus of friends.

“Personal relationships are always the key to good business. You can buy networking; you can’t buy friendships.” -Lindsay Fox

You are a node in a network.

What you do in life has a ripple effect on other people.

In your 20’s you are experiencing new people entering and leaving your life. Some will be people that can make a drastic, positive difference in your life.

Perhaps one of these people turns into a professional mentor.

Maybe your college roommate becomes your business partner in your successful venture.

It’s possible that one of your college professors helps you land your first big employment opportunity after graduation.

The richness of the people that are going to enter your experience at this point of your life can really enhance the quality and prosperity of your future successes.

Make note of the people who you are surrounding yourself with.

Keep them close. Help them when they call on you. Your relationships with these people should be symbiotic. You will help one another tackle obstacles as they come your way.

Your waves will ripple and cause revolutionary waves in the years to come.

Enjoy yourself.

“Fun is one of the most important — and underrated — ingredients in any successful venture. If you’re not having fun, then it’s probably time to call it quits and try something else.” -Richard Branson

This is a grand goal of life.

It’s especially pronounced in your 20's.

Think about what people say to you all the time when you are going out for the night or perhaps on a trip or maybe a date or anything that is supposed to be “fun” and leisurely.

People will often say, “enjoy yourself!”

They don’t typically say, “enjoy everyone else” or “enjoy your surroundings.”

All you really need is yourself.

You only have one life and one body to live that life (well of course until we can tap into and download our consciousness into a fresh and healthy surrogate body).

Make it a focal point of your life to enjoy yourself. Have fun. When you make mistakes, own the mistake and move on. Saw what’s on your mind. Wear what you want to wear. Work the job you want to work. Create from the confines of your mind what you want to create.

Work your ass off and with that, enjoy the hell out of this life you have.
